What could ever cause this sad face with an ice cream in hand. Well, let me tell you it wasn't pleasant for mom either. Sydney had her "getting ready for kindergarten" doctors appointment on Monday. We talked about this upcoming appointment for about a week. We talked about how the doctor was going to check her eyes, ears, mouth, tummy, spine, legs and feet. She said, "Mommy, Dr. Steve is going to check everything from head to toe?" We even talked about the shots and practice small pinches on her skin. She seemed ready to go and knew that she would get an ice cream afterwards. Since we frequent the doctors office with her asthma, I wanted that day to be different and exciting that she is getting checked out for kindergarten. I even had someone watch Camden so she could feel special.
She loved having her eyes and ears checked. She thought that was a fun game and wanted to do more. The checkup by Dr. Steve went great. Sydney then asked if she had to get shots. He told Sydney "yes," and then listed all the shots she would have to get. That's when everything went downhill.
We walked over to the injection clinic and while waiting for our turn Sydney said, "Mommy, I want to get ice cream now and no shots. Let's go home!" The nurse called Sydney's name and let me tell you EVERYONE could hear what Sydney thought about the shots. I know that she was really nervous because she has had several IV's and we all know that those do hurt. I kept trying to tell her, it's like getting a flu shot. She has always handled those well and told me earlier that week that she likes getting flu shots and she would me fine.
Sydney "!FREAKED!" out when she saw several needles ready and waiting. We had to hold her down. There was a lot of screaming and kicking involved in the process even though it was pretty quick. She got 4 shots. After I peeled her off the floor and told her she was all done, she looked at me and said angrily that I lied to her with a very mad face. When we walked out of the office, everyone had to look who the tortured child was. It was embarrassing and funny at the same time. I know her fears were real, but she way, way, way overreacted.
So as promised I took her to McDonald's for an ice cream and she was so mad at me she didn't talk the whole time while driving. I handed her the ice cream and she seriously gave me the look of death. I said, "Sydney, aren't you going to take a lick?" She yelled, "No! Mommy, you broke my heart into pieces!" WOW! She was seriously mad. Once we got home, she settled in at her table and started eating her ice cream. I grabbed my camera and asked her why she got an ice cream and as you can see, it brought all the emotions back.

OH MY GOODNESS! The pictures make the story ten times better! What a sad face!
What an over-emotional day!!! Hopefully she feels better today!!!
Now you REALLY better buy her that flute.
Wow, she has such a way of expressing herself and her word choices are always so descriptive of her emotions. Did it break your heart to hear it?
that's a great story :) lol Is she feeling a little happier to you again :)?
when sydney told me how she felt about me and the shots, i was pretty shocked and suprised she was so hurt. i prepared her the best i could. she was one mad little girl for 2 days. she is better now, but don't bring it up unless you want to see the face and hear the comments again. nothing a little therapy won't fix in a few years! :)
I hate that good parenting means being the bad guy!
Lora,
I'm so glad you took pictures. I know it's mean, but sometimes kids are ridiculous and it's nice to have proof.
My heart goes out to both of you! One of my very earliest childhood memories is of getting those kindergarten shots. I hit the needle as it went in my hip, causing it to jam in and give me a huge goose-egg. Ah, fond memories.
The last time E had a flu shot she created a scene much like Sydney's. It was given to her in her arm, and on the way out, she was LIMPING.
