Friday was Valentines Day at Sydney's school. As my role as Room Mom, I am suppose to come up with classroom activities for holidays and decided I would mix things up a little bit for this party. I was having a hard time coming up with fun and cute Valentine crafts so I decided to go science. I wanted to give the kids a Valentine Science Party. I also decided that I wanted to make it so the kids would really pay attention and remember the day so......
I became Mrs. Valentine Science Fairy! I know...I know...I look a little silly, BUT the kids LOVED it and that is what matters. During the kids lunch break, Anson and I set everything up in the classroom for the Valentine science experiments. So when it came close to the time for the show to start, Sydney and I stepped out of the classroom to get ready. I glammed up with Valentine socks, a pink tu-tu, a pink feather boa, a pair of pink long diamond earrings with matching bracelet, pink glitter glasses topped with a pink bow tied in my hair. I felt really silly and unsure about the whole thing, but the kids responded with big smiles and sparkles in their eyes, it was all worth it.
Once all the kids were sitting on the carpet ready for the show, we were introduced and entered the room handing out heart shape valentines to everyone, even to their classroom pet lizard, Lola, with the music "Under the Sea" playing in the back ground from the Little Mermaid.
I introduced myself as the Valentine Science Fairy and explained that every experiment we were going to see had something to do with Valentines. But before we could get started, we needed to dress like scientists. Off came the tu-tu, on came the lab coat. I borrowed four child size lab coats from several friends from a previous science birthday party we did. Many of the kids had the chance to dress up like a scientist wearing a lab coat, sunglasses and gloves. They looked too cute!
Our first experiment was the dry ice heart bubbles. These were so fun to watch and play with. If you wore knit gloves, you could catch the bubbles, toss them into the air and catch them again. I also had a wool sweater on the table so when the bubbles fell on the table they wouldn't pop. You could stack the bubbles onto of each other.
Our next experiment was our Valentine Goo! When the opportunity was present, my little scientist could assist me with the experiment. Here we are adding our red food coloring to the goo to make it Valentine Pink Goo. The kids learned that the goo is a polymer. This is where individual molecules connect together to make a polymer also known as a goo.
Once the special chemical was added the goo started to form. The kids were full of ewwww, ahhhh, that's cool.
We next moved into the Bleeding Heart experiment. I was really surprised how much the kids loved this one. Each table had a heart shape cake pan filled with one inch of milk. We then added several drops of food coloring in each corner of the pan. Green in one, blue and red in the other. I then took a Q-tip dipped in the special solution and then touched the drops of food coloring. The color would quickly shoot/repel to the other side of the pan making pretty swirls of color in the milk.
Before we had our last experiment, I did the dry ice fortune telling bubble for them again from our Halloween party. They loved it!
The grand finale of the party was the love meter. I told the kids that since it was Valentines, Mr. Hatch made me a special potion to let me know how much he loves me. On the tall glass vase, there were heart meters of love. The first one said friends. Second one said likes me and the last one said true love.
There was little to no reaction when added the first two chemicals. We were only friends.
Once I poured the love potion into the vase, there was a quick reaction and the bubbles passed the true love heart, out of the vase, on the table then off the table onto the floor. The kids reaction to this was great. They started to clap and were very excited and happy that Mr. Hatch love Mrs. Hatch A LOT. So much... it was everywhere. So there you have it! I had a lot of fun coming up with the ideas and watching the kids have fun with the show. When I asked Sydney what her favorite part was she said, "The love potion one. I liked it when the bubbles went on the floor. That means daddy really loves you a lot!"
