What Are You Doing?

Most mornings for the first hour or so Camden and I do our own thing after Anson and Sydney have left for the day. I jump on the treadmill, load and unload the dishwasher, make beds, pay bill,s etc. In the meantime in passing I'll see Camden reading a book, playing with his magnets, Pixo or Perler bead design or discovering an old toy in his room he hasn't played with for a while.

Several weeks back, I realized after passing through the living room several times that Camden was just laying on the floor staring off into la la land. I snapped a few shots of him in this la la moment that lasted for about 45 minutes.
He wasn't talking or making any noise, but just looking off into a whole different world while wiggling around a bit.
I put my camera down after this shot and asked Camden if he was bored or didn't feel well. His response, "Mom! Don't mess me up! I'm counting by two's to 900 and I'm on 506!" I was pretty surprised he had self entertained himself counting for nearly an hour. When I asked him 900 he said frustrated that I interrupted him again, "Because it's a big number and I want to!
This is who Camden is. A thinker. If I put him in timeout for bad behavior, I have found that it really isn't a punishment at times for him. After several timeout accounts, his answer to, "Camden, do you know why you are in timeout?" He replies by saying, "Mommy, I counted really high to 300!" or "Mom, what makes glue sticky?" He is for sure not thinking about the bad choice he has made. One time he even told me that he liked timeout because, "I get to think!"
So if Camden ever gives you the la la stare....I'm sure he is doing some good thinkin'!

Cool post, as always many thanks.

When does he start kindergarten? My mother, the world's best kindergarten teacher, had a goal that all her students could count, with confidence, from 1 to 10 by the end of their 1st four weeks in her class. We hope Camden is ready for school this fall.

We also hope his teacher knows why glue is sticky or at least will help him discover the answer. We can hardly wait until he wants to know why firecrackers go "bang." We're thinking that will be an interesting blog post the day after he discovers the answer to that question.

And, we're very impressed he's cleaver enough to make "lemonade" out of his "timeout" sessions.
