Getting That Perfect Picture?!?

I get asked a lot "That is a great picture! How do you get your kids to pose for the camera?" My answer is, "I currently have over 15,000 pictures of my kids. There has to be a least 1 or 2 good pictures."

This is what a typical round of photographs can look like. Of course the kids are not always in the mood to take pictures but will try to cooperate. The best shots are probably candid ones where you get a natural smile. The picture above makes me think of trying to pose for grade-school pictures where you think your mouth is doing one thing and you find out later that it looks like you were focusing on going potty instead. These are obviously examples of not so candid shots. It can be next to impossible to get a cute portrait-like picture. There are too many things that can go wrong. Sometimes the stars have to align to get both kids to look at the camera, have natural smiles and normal looking stances. This is not my favorite picture of the two of them together, but the best picture out of my photo shoot for a portrait-like picture. I did get some fun pictures along the way that I love even though they didn't match what I was looking for....

Take #1. Looking for the natural smile, try again.

Take #2. Still looking for that natural smile.

Take #3. OK. Now they are just being silly.

Take #4. Wow...the monsters are out!

Take #5. Oh...the monsters are gone and my sweet kids are back.

Take #6. My plea..."Please smile!" This is what I got and then I gave up on snapping the perfect portrait. You just have to be flexible and those perfect frame worthy pictures will come. Just keep snapping those pictures away. One of 15,000 will be what you looking for.

I have to say though, I think the monsters shot is great - lots of personality!
